Aromatherapy

How it Works

The massage part of aromatherapy massage works like many other types of massage buy applying a variety of strokes at various pressures to relax the muscles and, thereby, improve blood flow. Muscular aches and pains are often caused by tension and tight ‘knots’ so the massage works to gently release the tension and break down ‘knots’. Being massaged also releases stress relieving hormones like oxytocin and serotonin so has a positive impact on your mental health as well as physical. Essential oils used in aromatherapy massage also help to enhance your mental wellbeing as smell is closely associated with memory and emotion so different smells can stimulate different emotions. Therefore, both body and mind are deeply relaxed by aromatherapy massage which leaves you feeling great as well as tackling your aches and pains.

What it Helps

People have used aromatherapy to help with a whole range of issues for a very long time. Most commonly, aromatherapy can help relieve stress, improve sleep and alleviate anxiety and depression. Some essential oils are particularly good at helping to stimulate circulation and reduce swelling so, when combined with massage, can help musculoskeletal pain and support healing. Aromatherapy massage also helps to stimulate the limbic system and this together with the improvement in blood flow, thanks to the relaxed muscles, helps to boost the immune system. Relaxed muscles and soothing smells also help to relieve headaches, reduce anxiety and clear the mind.

What to Expect from Aromatherapy Massage

Like all massage therapies at The Float Spa, when you arrive for your appointment, the therapist will speak to you before you undress for your massage about what you would like out of your session. They will decide the best course of action in regard to where on your body to focus on and what kind of massage techniques they’ll need to apply to help you get the best outcome. Once they know exactly what you are looking for, they can also formulate a blend of essential oils best suited to your needs. The therapist will leave the room while you get undressed down to your underwear and cover yourself in towel. When you’re ready, they will begin the massage by gently relaxing the muscles before applying a little more pressure to encourage the muscles to deeply relax. Some particularly tight areas may be a little painful when pressure is applied to them but if you experience significant discomfort or sudden pain, tell them immediately and they’ll stop. Aromatherapy massage is extremely relaxing so you may leave feeling wonderfully calm but a bit woozy. Our therapist recommend that you don’t do anything strenuous after massages and you drink plenty of water.
