The Quiet Power of Floating

By Camille Pierson

Why an Hour of Weightlessness Changes Everything

There’s a moment, about forty minutes into a float, when something shifts. The mind stops chasing its own tail. The shoulders finally drop. The world, for once, goes quiet.

At Float Spa, we see this happen every single day. And it never stops feeling like a small miracle.

What Actually Happens When You Float

Floating is simple in principle: you lie back in a pod filled with water saturated in over 500kg of magnesium-rich Epsom salts, warmed to skin temperature, and let gravity go. No pressure on your joints, no weight on your spine, nothing pulling at your muscles. Just stillness.

With no noise, no light (if you choose), and nothing left to hold you up, your body gets the one thing it rarely gets in modern life: complete permission to switch off.

Around the forty minute mark, your brain naturally drifts from its usual busy Alpha state into Theta, the same deep, dreamy state you’d normally only touch just before sleep or in deep meditation. It’s in this state that the real benefits begin.

Calm That Reaches the Body, Not Just the Mind

Stress isn’t just a feeling. It’s a physical process, and it takes a physical toll: tense muscles, disrupted sleep, a racing mind that won’t settle. Floating works on all of it at once.

  • Cortisol drops. Without the constant noise of the outside world to process, your body naturally lowers its stress hormone levels.
  • Muscles let go. Free from gravity, blood circulates more freely and tension held in the shoulders, neck, and back has nowhere left to hide.
  • Sleep improves. Many of our regulars tell us their first proper night’s sleep in months came after a float.
  • Pain eases. The combination of weightlessness and an endorphin release gives floating a genuine painkilling effect, which is why so many people turn to it for chronic pain, injury recovery, and muscular tension.

Not Just Relaxation. Recovery.

Floating is often mistaken for simple relaxation, but it goes further. Athletes use it to speed up recovery between training sessions. People managing chronic pain, migraines, or high blood pressure use it as part of a longer-term approach to their health. Mums-to-be in the second and third trimester use it to take the weight off, literally, during a season when their bodies are working harder than ever.

And because the water is rich in magnesium, an essential mineral most of us are quietly deficient in, your skin absorbs what it needs while you float. You leave not just calmer, but genuinely replenished.

Is It For You?

Floating tends to suit anyone who is:

  • Running on empty, or close to burnout
  • Carrying chronic tension or pain
  • Recovering from injury or training hard
  • Simply craving an hour where nobody needs anything from them

If you’ve never floated before, we always recommend giving it at least three sessions before deciding whether it’s for you. Like yoga or meditation, it’s a practice. The benefits build the more you return.
