Online Yoga Course: Yoga for Menopause
Investment: £50 for 6 sessions
Teacher: Di Dearle
Not everyone who experiences troublesome menopausal symptoms is comfortable taking HRT (hormone replacement therapy) so this form of yoga was developed to help relieve those symptoms and make the menopause more tolerable all round. This online beginners’ course in yoga for the menopause is six sessions long and will give you a good grounding in the fundamental principles of this type of yoga so you can feel confident joining in with a class in the studio knowing that you know what to do and what to expect.
Most people know that menopausal symptoms are caused by imbalances in hormones like testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone. Therefore, stimulating the glands which produce this hormones and supporting the organs which regulate them, like the liver, is helpful in reducing these symptoms. That is why yoga for the menopause focuses on postures and movements which increase blood flow to and massage hormone producing glands as well as supporting the liver through better blood flow throughout the body which helps to remove toxins (another function of the liver).
What really exacerbates menopausal symptoms, however, is stress and tension. In fact, many menopausal symptoms are also symptoms of stress at any stage of life such as:
- Poor sleep
- Anxiety, depression and irritability
- Memory loss and poor concentration
- Irregular periods
This means that the way yoga helps to relieve stress also works to relieve many of these symptoms of the menopause with the addition of night sweats and hot flushes too. By stretching out tense muscles and calming the mind, yoga for the menopause can leave you feeling more comfortable, more relaxed and better able to deal with all aspects of the menopause.
Our online beginners’ course works by first teaching you all about yoga and the menopause before taking you step by step through the techniques. You will learn how to use your breath to coordinate with the movements to relax muscles and calm the mind through gentle focus. The instructor will show you the yoga poses used in this type of yoga and give you instruction on how to get into these poses and hold them to receive maximum benefit. They will show you how to move between poses smoothly and safely so, even if you have never done yoga before, you can maintain the right form and technique. All postures and movements come with options so you can either make them easier or challenge yourself further to make the whole practice right for you.
Because yoga is as much about the mind as the body, you will also learn relaxation techniques such as meditation and mindfulness and be guided through so you can easily follow them and finish the session feeling calm, relaxed and revitalised.
Like all of our online beginners’ courses, yoga for the menopause is suitable for people with no experience of yoga or more experienced yoga practitioners who are not familiar with this style of yoga.
This 6 session course gives you the basics of Yin Yang Flow Yoga, each session varies in length.
