Online Beginners Course: Yin Yoga
Investment: £50 for 6 sessions
Teacher: Justine Simon
With modern life being so hectic, stressful and noisy, this quiet and relatively still form of yoga provides a welcome break and an opportunity for practitioners to refresh their mind and body. Involving mostly sitting and lying postures, this form of yoga focuses of meditation and mindfulness to profoundly calm the mind and relax the body. Using the breath and bringing the attention to the postures’ effects on the body are a central part of this style of yoga but they do take a little practice to allow people to focus fully so this beginners’ course helps to ease you into it. Both people brand new to yoga and people experienced in other styles can benefit from this course as Yin yoga can be quite different to other forms.
Traditional Yin yoga comes from Taoist tradition and involves practitioners holding poses for three to five minutes to gently but profoundly stretch tendons, ligaments and facia to strengthen and improve the condition of delicate connective tissue. It was also developed as a way to help people meditate who were too restless to effectively meditate while remaining still by giving them something to focus on while allowing stray thoughts to come and go without focusing on them or feeling the need to follow them. Letting the mind quiet in this way is a great way to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. This system is the antagonist to the ‘fight or flight’ response in the body which releases stress hormones, suppresses body function, raises the heart rate, increases blood pressure and leaves muscles tight. Therefore, regularly practicing this type of yoga counters all these effects by relaxing muscles, removing stress hormones from the body and stimulating the release of ‘feel good’ hormones like endorphins and serotonin.
Although this is a calm, quiet and gentle form of yoga, the poses can still be quite challenging so this beginners’ course gives you clear simple instruction on the postures and guidance through the breathing exercises and meditations. As this is a more still form of yoga, we recommend doing the practice in a warm room or with warmer clothes than other forms of yoga. After the course, you should feel more confident in taking up a regular Yin yoga practice and after each session you should feel profoundly relaxed, refreshed and more comfortable in your body.
This 6 session course gives you the basics of Yin Yoga, each session varies in length.
