How Infrared Saunas Help to Balance Hormones and Improve Menstrual Cramps and Menopausal Symptoms

By Camille Pierson

Infrared Saunas have lots of varied health benefits but, believe it or not, they can help with problems caused by hormone imbalances too.  Because hormones have so many functions in the body and are so prone to fluctuations in their levels, especially in women, when they get out of balance with each other, they can cause all kinds of problems.  Digestive problems, loss of libido, skin problems, disturbed sleep, increased appetite, anxiety, low mood, fatigue, headaches, etc. can be related to hormone imbalances but there are lots of things you can do to help this situation and using our infrared sauna is one of them.

Hormone Imbalance

It’s hard to imagine how using a sauna could help with hormone imbalance but it makes more sense when you know that a major organ involved in regulating hormones is the liver. As the main organ in the body responsible for removing toxins, the liver can become congested if it has to deal with a lot of toxins.  Using an infrared sauna helps to remove some toxins and heavy metals from the body through sweat.  This allows the liver to function more easily and become more efficient at regulating hormones.

A major cause of hormone imbalance is stress and Cortisol.  It seems to be the culprit for so many problems in our bodies!  Using our infrared sauna is very relaxing and using it regularly can have a positive impact on the levels of stress hormones in your body.  Because stress causes the body to release more of some hormones and less of others than usual, long term stress can cause serious problems with your hormones so it is important to give your body a rest from stress as often as possible.

Menstrual Cramps

There are a number of ways an infrared sauna can help relieve cramps.  Warmth is an obvious one as we have all tried the hot water bottle trick but the overall effect of relaxing muscles is also helpful, as is the way the sweating helps to remove excess water and salt from the body which gets retained during periods.  Spending time in the sauna also releases endorphins which make you feel good as well as acting as a natural pain killer.

Menopausal Symptoms

The overall boost in wellbeing and relief from aches, stress and fatigue can all be helpful to relieve menopausal symptoms.  Lots of menopausal women have reported reductions in their hot flushes when regularly using a sauna, which sounds really counterintuitive but does seem to work, as blood flow is improved and the immune system is strengthened too.  Another benefit everyone receives but menopausal women seem to notice the most is an improvement of skin quality as the improved circulation removes toxins from the skin and allows oxygen and nutrients to flow more freely.  Infrared saunas also improve skin conditions like eczema and reduce inflammation in the skin.  The real bonus though is the way infrared saunas stimulate our skin to produce more collagen and elastin which leads to firmer, plumper skin.

Sessions in our infrared sauna will make you feel better all round regardless of what your hormones are up to but they can also be a help if you’re having trouble in that department. If you have any questions about our sauna or would like to book a session, please call 01273 933680.
